Summer: long and hot
From June through September, highs sit around 90°F or more, and the humidity makes it feel hotter. This is the season that matters most for your budget and comfort.
- Electric bills go up with air conditioning. Longview's electric company is SWEPCO.
- A pool gets real use. Apartment pools and the city's summer pools are busy from late May into September.
- Dogs need early morning or late evening walks. Hot pavement burns paws.
- Cars heat up fast. Covered or shaded parking helps.
Fall: the best months
October and November are why many people like East Texas. October highs average about 79°F and November about 68°F. It is a good time to move, too: no summer heat on moving day, and no winter freeze yet.
Winter: mild, with the odd hard freeze
Winter highs are usually in the upper 50s and low 60s. Lows often drop into the upper 30s.
- First freeze: the median first fall freeze is around November 18. The median last spring freeze is around March 13 (NOAA NCEI).
- Snow is rare and light. A nearby NOAA station records less than an inch a year on average.
- Hard freezes happen some winters. On those nights, keep cabinet doors under sinks open, let faucets drip if your apartment office asks you to, and know where your water shut-off is. Call maintenance right away if a pipe bursts.
During the February 2021 winter storm, SWEPCO ran rolling outages at the direction of the Southwest Power Pool. Longview is on that grid, not ERCOT, the grid most of Texas uses.
Spring: storm season
Spring is pleasant, with highs in the 70s and 80s, but it is also storm season. The National Weather Service office in Shreveport, which covers Longview, says tornado activity in the region peaks from March into June, with a second, smaller peak from November to early January (NWS Shreveport).
Is Longview in Tornado Alley? Not in the classic Plains sense, but East Texas does get severe storms and tornadoes, mostly in spring. Simple steps:
- Turn on weather alerts on your phone.
- Know the safest spot in your apartment: an interior room or bathroom on the lowest floor, away from windows.
- Get renters insurance. It covers your belongings if a storm damages them. Your landlord's insurance does not.
What Longview weather means for renting
When you tour apartments in Longview, ask about the things the weather tests:
- Air conditioning. How old is the system, and how fast is it fixed in July?
- Emergency maintenance. Is it 24 hours? A broken A/C in August or a burst pipe in January can't wait until Monday.
- Windows and blinds. Good blinds keep afternoon sun out and lower your bill.
- Drainage. After a heavy rain, does water pool near the building or the parking lot?
- A patio or balcony. In spring and fall, you will use it.
